LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - "The embassy recommended this step out of an abundance of caution," said State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf, citing "a lack of options for routine health care services at major medical facilities due to the Ebola outbreak."
These men and women are your brothers and sisters under Christ! They NEED YOUR HELP!
Hard also said the State Department is also "reconfiguring" its staff at the embassy in Fretown to "be more responsive" to the current crisis.
"We remain deeply committed to supporting Sierra Leone and regional and international efforts to strengthen the capacity of the country's health care infrastructure and system-specifically, the capacity to contain and control the transmission of the Ebola virus and deliver health care," she said.
This follows the August 7 order by the United States for families of embassy staff to leave Liberia, another country that is suffering under the world's worst Ebola outbreak.
These orders followed a conversation between American President Barack Obama and the president of Sierra Leone, Ernest Bai, and president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia on August 14, the White House said.
"In his conversations with both leaders, the president underscored the commitment of the United States to work with Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other international partners to contain the outbreak and expressed his condolences for the lives lost," the White House said.
The World Health Organization has reported that the death toll from this outbreak reached 1,069 on August 13.
